Signage for the art piece “Travel Safe”

Commercial Project | Cast Glass

We are proud to share a special project we worked on for local artist Darcy Ataman. Darcy came to us requesting an eye catching/free standing glass piece that would depict an image of a boat of refugees, as well as his artist statement and QR code for his art installation “Travel Safe”. The sign draws the viewer in and encourages people to explore how they can help with the ongoing plight of refugees worldwide.

Our glass was kiln cast/hand painted and then set into a custom steel stand made in-house.

The art installation “Travel Safe” which was installed in front of the Burton Cummings Theatre, was made using more than 3,000 discarded shoes, which were obtained from refugees and displaced peoples in 25 different countries. The shoes were then arranged on a 2.5 story high armature to depict the stylized image of 2 year old Alan Kurdi, who washed up on Turkish soil 10 years ago. Darcy says he hopes that the colossal installation will serve as a reminder to Canadians about the struggles of refugee children, who often flee to safety with nothing else but their shoes. We were honored to work on this piece for Darcy
